Choose the setup you want to check
Options help you jump to a section. They do not detect your device or open the camera.
Start with the symptom, not a full reset
If the video area is black, a permission request was dismissed or the wrong camera appears, start with the checks below. A black picture alone does not tell you whether the cause is the website, the browser or the device.
The preview on a Yapchat information page is example media. It is different from the camera view in the actual video flow. Open the real video entry when you are ready to check permissions, and read the browser request before allowing access.
A short camera checklist
- Check that you opened the intended website.
- Review camera and microphone permission for that site.
- Close other applications that may be using the camera.
- Check which camera is selected.
- Reload after changing a relevant setting, then try once.
Change one thing at a time. If you change several settings and the camera starts working, it is harder to know which change helped. Reloading may end an active conversation, so leave the call before troubleshooting.
Chrome on a computer
Open Chrome Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings. Review Camera and Microphone separately. If the site is blocked, review its permission and allow access only if you intend to use it.
Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera / Microphone
Under Camera, check the selected device. An external webcam, a built-in camera and a virtual camera may appear as different choices. Select the real camera you want, then return to the chat and try again.
Chrome on Android
In Chrome, open Settings, then Site settings, then Camera or Microphone. Review any blocked entry for the site. Chrome also needs the relevant device-level permission; if it is disabled, review Chrome’s app permissions in Android settings.
Chrome Settings → Site settings → Camera or Microphone
Safari on Mac
In Safari, open Settings, then Websites. Review Camera and Microphone for the relevant website. You can also use the current website’s settings from Safari’s page controls. Read the selected permission rather than assuming the default applies to this site.
Safari Settings → Websites → Camera / Microphone
Chrome on iPhone or iPad
Review the site’s camera or microphone controls in Chrome where available. If device-level access for Chrome is disabled, check Chrome’s permissions in the iPhone or iPad Settings app. A disabled device permission can prevent the usual website prompt from appearing.
iPhone/iPad Settings → Chrome → Camera / Microphone
Windows 11 access
Open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. Check camera access and the setting for desktop apps, which can affect desktop browsers. Review Microphone separately if sound also fails.
Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
A desktop browser may not have its own individual toggle in the same list as Microsoft Store apps. Follow the desktop-app setting rather than looking indefinitely for a separate website entry.
Close competing camera apps and check the device
Leave other video-call tabs and close applications that may be using the camera. If you use an external webcam, check its connection and any physical privacy shutter.
Try the device in a camera application you already trust, then close that application before returning to the browser. If it fails there as well, the issue may need device or operating-system troubleshooting rather than another change to the chat page.
When the picture works but the chat does not
A working camera does not guarantee that a call will connect immediately. Availability, network conditions and the other participant also matter. If the picture appears but the call repeatedly drops, use the connection guide instead of continuing to change camera settings.
If you do not want to use video while checking the problem, messaging is another starting point. Messaging may have different account or payment requirements.
If the checks do not resolve it
Note your device, browser, the exact message shown and the point where the problem appears. Do not include passwords, payment details or private chat content when using the product’s help route.
On a managed work or school device, an administrator may control permissions. Do not bypass those controls. Use the official browser or device guidance when a setting is unavailable.
You can also browse the Yapchat FAQ for related permission questions.
